Yes and No

People love to ask questions about what I do. The one asked most though is "How can you stand to do that job? Doesn't it get to you?" Well, Yes and No.

I pondered this recently as I came home after working 21 straight hours. As I drove in the early morning light, the city looked fresh and new, nobody was really out and about yet as it was the weekend, and looking into the distance the view of the mountains was crystal clear. God had blessed the world with a beautiful morning and it seemed to begin to erase the events of the night before from my mind.

In the course of my job I see a lot of things. A glimpse of my day included a 3 year old scalded by hot water(he pulled it down on himself from a pot on a stove), a domestic violence call, two drunks, a full Code while enroute back, and a teen so high on LSD it took 7 people to hold him down.

After watching these things and seeing just how bad some folks lives are, it really makes me stop and think. When I come home to my quiet little house and an ancient old dog who is thrilled to see me, when I sit down to peruse the morning paper with a cup of coffee and a yogurt and things are silent after seeing and listening to other people's chaos, it just makes me happy and thankful to know that I have a relatively quiet normal little life. Sure I may have my moments (who doesn't?) but they really aren't a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

So do things bother me? Sure they do, but I've learned over time how to put it all in perspective, and leave it behind me when I go home. Being thankful for what you do have makes you appreciate the rest of life a whole lot more.

I'm glad that there are people like you who do what you do, I never could.

Hope you don't mind, Rox, I ran off this post to be put on the board down at my son's rescue company. (No identifying info, tho.)

I always enjoy visiting here and reflecting on what you say.

Love, R

I'm glad there's people out there like you. I won't say "I don't know how you do it" because I'm asked that question in what I do. You do it because you want to help people.

Every few years I have a child who completely wins my heart. I love all the kids but there's at least 1 who does the most. I try not to do that but hasn't worked so far.I do love them all though even with their own little quirks. It's hard.

I ran into a previous student I had when she was in kindergaten and wheelchair bound. She's now in highschool and out of the wheelchair! She had surgery and has to wear braces. She did beat the odds! Anyway, she remembered me and came up and hugged me. Said she wished sometimes she was back in my class! Her face did look very familiar. I just couldn't remember her name.

You're great Rox!
